As we look back on 2017 and Canada’s celebration of its 150th birthday right across the country, we at Variety Village have been celebrating too. As a matter of fact, since Canada’s birthday on July 1st we’ve been celebrating 150 Reasons to Give to my Village – the one place I call my second home.

Can you think of 150 Reasons to Give? For me, coming up with these reasons is the easy part. I could think of at least 150 more.

And I’m lucky enough to be Reason # 54.

My name is Megan. I’ve been a member of Variety since I was a baby in a car seat. Before I was born, I suffered a stroke that damaged the nerves on my left side causing weakness in my muscles.

I’m 17 years old now and I’m a swimmer with a disability on the Flames Swim Team. I have competed in local and national swim championships over the years earning multiple bronze, silver and gold medals. But even if I don’t win a medal, I am always thrilled if I achieve a personal best time. I’m also a Variety Village Ambassador. It gives me great pleasure to go out into the community across this province and speak about the impact Variety has had on my life and highlight the amazing inclusive programs, caring instructors and fellow athletes I’ve encountered throughout my years at Variety Village.

Variety has given me the support and confidence I need to do the things I want to do in my life. The Village is a place where I can be my complete self without anyone judging me. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind place. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Variety Village. Realizing how much it means to me and how much it has affected my life shows that Variety Village is more than just a facility, it’s a place where I am welcomed and everyone who enters is welcomed too.

I can’t imagine a better country to live in than Canada or that I would have been as fortunate to have had as many opportunities to succeed at my sport and in my personal life without Variety’s support and encouragement.

Did you know that most Canadians don’t give unless asked? Our lives are busy and giving isn’t always at the top of our minds. Sometimes we need to be reminded.

Perhaps you would consider becoming a monthly donor. Your gift can be spread out over twelve months of the year and no gift amount is too small or too large! By visiting our 150 Reasons to Give campaign on the Variety Village website at www.varietyvillage.ca/150-ways-to-give/ I am sure you will agree there are so many wonderful reasons to give to Variety.

Please make your gift now. We will continue to post more reasons to give right up until the end of 2017 when we will reach Reason #150.

And please know that your gift will go a long way to helping children with disabilities like me.

$150 will subsidize a child’s membership for one year – that’s 365 days of belonging, achieving and personal bests.

Sincerely yours,

Megan
