An avid skier and recreational scuba diver, Walter was encouraged by the Variety Village staff to develop his skills in the sports of his interest. His interest in track and field led him to compete at the 1986 International Games for the Disabled where he won silver in discus. That same year he collected silver and bronze medals in discus and track at the World Games. The Ontario Cerebral Palsy Association also named him “Athlete of the Year.”
Known for his independence and mischievous laughter, Marie Hren & Fred Gaby of the Adult Disabled Down Ski Club recall their time with Walter fondly, writing: “Walter was the nicest person and an amazing skier; a true inspiration to skiers with physical disabilities.”
